Symptoms of soft tissue sarcomas can vary depending on the size and location of the tumour. Patients may experience all, some, or none of the below features of a lump:
- Increasing in size
- Is larger than 5cm
- Usually painful, but not always
Concerning features of lumps include:
- Semi-solid/hard
- Protruding
- Fungating
- Fixed, or less mobile
If you are concerned about a lump, an ultrasound should be organised in the first instance.
Please note: a normal ultrasound result does not necessarily exclude sarcoma and patients should be referred on for further assessment if their symptoms persist or cause concern.
In GatewayC’s ‘Sarcoma – Early Diagnosis’ course, Dr Rebecca Leon, GatewayC GP Lead, discusses the typical presentation of soft tissue sarcoma and the recommended primary care investigations with Mr Amit Kumar, Consultant Orthopaedic and Sarcoma Surgeon.
