Oesophageal cancer and dysphagia

Potential pitfall:

Dysphagia is the most common presenting symptom of oesophageal cancer. It should be considered alongside a number of other symptoms when contemplating an upper gastrointestinal cancer referral.

Helpful hint:

NICE NG12 guidelines recommend offering urgent, direct access upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (to be performed within 2 weeks) or suspected cancer referral to assess for oesophageal cancer in people with dysphagia, or aged 55 and over with weight loss and any of the following: upper abdominal pain, reflux or dyspepsia.
