Whilst dyspepsia is commonplace in general practice, it can sometimes be an indicator of stomach or oesophageal cancers.

Potential pitfall:

Typically, dyspepsia may be associated with common and less serious triggers such as lifestyle factors or stress. With patients frequently presenting with dyspepsia, NICE gives clear guidance on which associated symptoms should also be considered that may in turn prompt the need for further investigation.

Helpful hint

NICE NG12 guidelines advise to consider direct upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for patients that are over 55, either with treatment-resistant dyspepsia, or present with dyspepsia in addition to:

  • Weight loss
  • Raised platelet count
  • Nausea or vomiting
