Can blood tests identify lung cancer?

A Full Blood Count (FBC) can help to identify cancer, but normal test results do not exclude the possibility of cancer. There are a number of test results which should be of concern, including:

  • Anaemia
  • Raised platelets
  • Abnormal liver function

Many patients with lung cancer will have normal blood tests but unexplained abnormalities may raise the suspicion of lung cancer and should be investigated. A chest X-ray is a useful initial investigation.
