Barrett’s oesophagus is associated with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer. When supporting a patient with Barrett’s oesophagus, are you clear on how to manage the condition?
4 tips to manage Barrett’s oesophagus in primary care include:
- Treatment, including high dose acid suppression
- Discuss lifestyle changes with patients, for example dietary advice and smoking cessation
- Surveillance programmes which include 2-3 yearly endoscopies
- GPs sometimes identify patients who have missed screening appointments. These patients should be referred back for screening.
GatewayC’s ‘Oesophageal Cancer – Early Diagnosis’ course aims to increase healthcare professionals’ confidence in identifying symptoms and risk factors indicative of possible oesophageal cancer, and differentiating between referral pathways.
The course also features an interview with Mr Simon Galloway, Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, who discusses how the disease is identified and provides advice on how to manage it.
