In this webinar, GatewayC met Dr Rory Harvey, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In this webinar, we explored the role and benefits of using the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) in patients with suspected bowel cancer.

Our speaker answered key questions from our audience, which included:

  • Should I complete a FIT with younger patients?
  • Is every lab using a level above 10 μg for symptomatic patients?
  • Should I refer a patient on a suspected cancer referral pathway if they have abdominal pain, no weight loss and a positive FIT?
  • Should I use a FIT in patients with raised platelets in LEGO-C cancers?
  • Is it useful to complete a FIT test, if a patient is reluctant to complete a two-week wait referral?
  • Can I use a FIT to screen patients who have had adenomas?
  • If someone has a gastric ulcer or gum bleeding will that give patients a positive FIT?
  • Is there a problem with patients who have low rectal or anal cancers having a negative FIT?
  • Can I use a FIT in patients with low ferritin and normal haemoglobin?
  • Do I need to stop PPIs before a patient completes a FIT?
