An NHS-run podcast set to support GPs and primary care clinicians detect cancer earlier is coming back.
GPs Talk Cancer launched in July 2023 by GatewayC – the free early cancer diagnosis resource funded by the NHS, to help support the NHS Long Term Plan to diagnose 75% of patients with cancer at an early stage (stage 1 or stage 2) by 2028.
Episodes are hosted by experienced GPs and cover real-life cases from general practice, and site-specific topics from myeloma to endometrial cancers.
Cancer barriers, interpreting blood results and palliative care are also covered in this series due to listener requests.
GP host Dr Rebecca Leon, who is a GP Lead for the GatewayC resource, said: “Even if this series helps one GP diagnose cancer at an early stage, we feel that is a huge achievement.”
Dr Rebecca Leon, a practicing GP, is one of the GPs working directly with the GatewayC resource to support the earlier and faster cancer diagnosis in primary care.
Over a cup of coffee, with fellow host Dr Sarah Taylor, she shares cancer incidence statistics, essential facts, and useful research.
“As GPs, we know how busy primary care professionals are. This series is packed with quick, clear, clinical insights for topping up your knowledge on-the-go.” Dr Leon said.
‘Essential knowledge for GPs’
Associate Medical Director for Primary Care for the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance and host Dr Sarah Taylor said podcasting was a great format to provide timely up-to-date guidance.
“We aim to summarise guidance and share tips from experts and our own clinical practice to support primary care clinicians in the early diagnosis of cancer,” Dr Taylor said.
“We share anonymised real-life case studies of patients who have been diagnosed in primary care and recall patient experiences that have been shared in the courses available on the GatewayC resource.”
