Is lung cancer in never-smokers a hidden disease?

18th March 2022

Each year, in the UK, it is estimated that nearly 6,000 never-smokers die of lung cancer. This is more than those who die of cervical cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukaemia, or ovarian cancer.

If a patient has persistent chest symptoms longer than 3 weeks (cough, breathlessness, chest pain), it warrants an investigation. Healthcare professionals should not be reassured if a patient is a never-smoker.

In GatewayC’s ‘Lung Cancer – Early Diagnosis’ course, Dr Sarah Taylor talks to Dr Matthew Evison, Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, regarding what primary care professionals can do to help identify lung cancer in never-smokers.

Key elements of the ‘Lung Cancer – Early Diagnosis’ course include an exploration of key presenting symptoms, the role of chest X-rays, lung cancer in non-smokers, genomics, and targeted lung health checks.
