Cancer Keys

Persistent bone pain and myeloma

Published: 26th July 2022

Patients often visit healthcare professionals several times prior to the diagnosis of myeloma. This is mainly due to presenting symptoms being vague or overlapping with other conditions.

Patients with myeloma can experience persistent bone pain – usually the back, ribs or hips. The pain is frequently described as a persistent dull ache, which can be made worse by movement.

Helpful hint:

For people aged 60 and over with persistent bone pain, particularly back pain, or unexplained fracture, NICE NG12 guidelines recommends:

  • a full blood count
  • blood tests for calcium
  • and plasma viscosity or erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).
