The Edinburgh Dysphagia Score (EDS) can support the assessment of patients with dysphagia by identifying patients at lowest risk of a malignant diagnosis, thereby allowing resources to be concentrated on those at highest risk.
In the original study, the EDS identified a group of patients at the highest risk of cancer; in this group the cancer yield at endoscopy was approximately 17-20%. Calculating the EDS therefore enables patients most at risk to be prioritised for endoscopy.
It is recommended that healthcare professionals act on any clinical suspicion and their decision to refer a patient should not be based on the EDS alone.
