Infection prevention for cancer patients

Friday 6th March 2020

With COVID-19 hitting the headlines this week, the public are being advised to take infection prevention measures, such as thorough hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

People affected by cancer, especially certain types such as leukaemias, or those undergoing chemotherapy, can be immunosuppressed and generally at higher risk of infections.

Practical measures healthcare professionals can suggest, in addition to the usual hand washing guidance, can include:

Avoid shaking hands

Avoid touching door handles or bannisters

Spend limited time in crowded areas

Strictly adhere to food safety advice

Avoid people with known infections (including chicken pox or measles)

Ensure that patients and their families are up to date with relevant vaccinations, including flu
