Most individuals and their families work through the transition into end of life care differently. This means healthcare professionals are often faced with families who are at different stages in their perceptions and acceptance of the benefits of treatment, when to stop and how to start preparing for death. These issues can often lead to tensions and anxiety in relationships.
The first module of GatewayC’s Lung Cancer – End of Life Care course explores how to support a couple through the transition into end of life care and addresses some of these challenges.
By completing this course, you will:
- Develop skills which enable patients and their families to articulate their symptoms and concerns
- Assess, respond and offer support to patients and their families
- Develop increased knowledge and confidence in initiating conversations around death and dying
Relatives may put pressure on healthcare professionals to “tell him to eat” or “tell her she cannot give up”. There may be a lack of openness between couples which makes communication difficult. The first module includes a full interview with Communication skills expert Dr Catherine Heaven, who discusses how to manage couples who may be at different stages of the adjustment process and explores strategies to promote openness.
