Last week a report on Combating Cancer highlighted Kelly Smith, who visited the GP seven times in 6 months presenting vague symptoms. Eventually she was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer through A&E.
Not fitting the typical demographic for bowel cancer and falling outside NICE guidelines, she was initially tested for other bowel conditions.
Bowel Cancer Symptom Diary
Our course on FIT explores similar patient stories and how to proceed when symptomatic patients with persistent symptoms present normal FIT results. A symptom diary like this one from Bowel Cancer UK could help safety net patients. Recording symptoms and tracking changes with this tool can also help to diagnose other bowel conditions.
